Interessantes aus Informations- und Bibliothekswesen
Wie Welt.de berichtet bietet Google eine Bibliothek für das Handy. Bei den angebotenen Titeln handelt es sich hauptsächlich um englischsprachige Werke.
Zugänglich ist die mobile Version der “Google Book Search“, die im Netz unter books.google.com residiert, über ein iPhone oder auch über das Smartphone G1, eine Eigenkreation der Kalifornier, die hierzulande in Kooperation mit T-Mobile vertrieben wird.

Im International Journal of Speech Language and the Law, Vol 14, No 2 (2007), hatten Anders Eriksson und Francisco Lacerda einen Artikel über “Charlantry in forensic speech science: A problem to be taken seriously” veröffentlicht. Untersucht wird die Wirkungsweise von sogenannten Lügendetektoren. Aus dem Abstract:
Indeed, our review of scientific studies will show that these machines perform at chance level when tested for reliability. Given such results and the absence of scientific support for the underlying principles it is justified to view the use of these machines as charlatanry and we argue that there are serious ethical and security reasons to demand that responsible authorities and institutions should not get involved in such practices.
Amir Liberman, Gründer der Firma Nemesysco, die ihr Geld mit eben solcher Technologie verdient, fühlte sich angegriffen und drohte Rechtsschritte an. Equinox zog prompt den Schwanz ein und ersetze den Artikel durch einen Hinweis des Herausgebers, in dem das Vorgehen erklärt wird.
The Journal accepts that Mr Liberman and Nemesysco Limited were not asked to assist in the preparation of the article and further that they were not invited to comment on the content of the article prior to its publication where, in view of the content of the article, it would have been appropriate to invite them to do so. We have agreed to publish a letter from Mr Liberman and Nemesysco Limited setting out their objections to the article in more detail in a future issue of the journal.
Equinox will den Artikel in Zukunft nicht mehr öffentlich machen. Dies haben die Autoren dafür andernorts getan.

Das Goethe-Institut hat sich Anfang November 2008 entschlossen, dass seine Bibliotheken wieder Bibliotheken heißen dürfen. Die letzten Jahre hatte man großen Wert darauf gelegt, dass wir ‚Informationszentren‘ haben und nicht ‚nur‘ Bibliotheken. Die Begründung für die nun erfolgte Rückbesinnung lautet ebenso simpel wie zutreffend, dass Bibliotheken schon längst keine Bücherspeicher sind, sondern ‚ein breites Spektrum an Dienstleistungen (anbieten), das alle realen und virtuellen
Möglichkeiten umspannt.‘
Im Sinne der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit eine sinnvolle Entscheidung, ist der Begriff “Bibliothek” doch gut eingeführt und meist das, wonach Nutzer suchen dürften.
Der Amerikaner Gordon Bell speichert sein ganzes Leben im Computer ab. Das Forschungsprojekt “MyLifeBits” von Microsoft soll u.a. die Frage beantworten, wieviel Speicherplatz ein Leben benötigt …

Wie der Guardian berichtet, möchte Nintendo in Kürze mit einem Bundle für die Handheld-Konsole Nintendo DS auch auf dem E-Book-Markt mitmischen. Zusammen mit dem Verlag HarperCollins bietet Nintendo 100 Literaturklassiker für umgerechnet ca. 23 Euro an, allerdings vorerst nur auf dem britischen Markt.

Ein Wiki als Bibliothekshomepage hatten wir schon. Neuestes Fundstück: Netvibes für die Dublin City Libraries and Archive. Ein Katalog ist nicht enthalten, aber auch dies lässt sich per Widget problemlos integrieren. Ansonsten gibt es so ziemlich alles, was eine Bibliothekswebseite haben muss.
In einem Interview spricht Edward Byrne, Senior Librarian Web Services
der Dublin City Libraries auch die Schattenseite eines solchen Angebots an. Bis vor kurzem war das Angebot nämlich bei Pageflakes untergebracht, aber ein Umzug wurde notwendig.
Because of happenings in November 2008 with the loss of service for a week and the introduction of an ‘in your face’ advertisement flake upon its return without consultation or an alternative model being offered, Dublin City Public Libraries was forced to move to Netvibes as its portal delivery platform of choice. An added benefit of the move has been an improvement in page loading time, Netvibes being discernibly quicker to load than Pageflakes. Although Pageflakes have in recent days removed the offending advertisement flake and promised to provide different models in the near future, we have decided at remain with Netvibes for the foreseeable future, while at the same time maintaining a backup solution on Pageflakes. Events of November 2008 have highlighted the need to have a backup plan in place, one that can be quickly implemented if needed.
Nicht nur für viele Bibliothekare vermutlich ein Alptraum, einfach so ein ganzes Angebot zu einem anderen Anbieter zu verschieben. Umso schöner, dass eine große Bibliothek vormacht, dass dies möglich ist. Wie einfach solch eine Seite zu erstellen ist, wird auch schon durch die Einleitung von Michael Stephens deutlich:

Welt.online berichtet in einem Artikel unter anderem über die im Jahre 2002 eröffnete Bibliotheca Alexandrina:
