THE ROYAL PUBLIC LIBRARY OF HANOVER

The Royal Public Library of Hanover was founded by Duke JohnFrederick about the year 1660.It has been successively augmented by the acquisition of the following among other less important collections: – In 1678 that of M. Fogel of Hamburgh; in 1696, that of Westenholz; about 1698, that of the Elector Ernest Augustus ; in 1716, that of Leibnitz; in 1729, that of GW Molanus; in 1750, that of the late Duke of Cambridge , who bequeathed a Library of considerable value – especially well provided with books and MSS. relating to Hanover on condition that the works which were already possessed by the Royal Library should be transferred to the Town Library of the capital. The estimated number of volumes is, of printed books, upwards of 80,000; and of MSS., about 2000. The strength of the collection lies in the departments of History and Politics, and the MSS. are of considerable value. Of late years more liberal access has been permitted than formerly existed.

The chief attraction of the Hanover Library is its collection of the papers of Leibnitz, consisting of his correspondence. Besides his own letters, there are a great many letters of the eminent persons to whom he wrote. „His correspondence“, says Dr. Noehden , „was most extensive; and, what is surprising in a man so much occupied, it seems that he generally copied his letters, and not infrequently transcribed the same composition two or three times. Those in the Library are, for the most part, the first arrangements. There was scarcaly any one of his contemporaries of celebrity, with whom he had not an epistolary intercourse. A great many of the letters are written in French, and in Latin; some in other languages. One of his most distinguished correspondents was the Electoress of Hanover, the Princess Sophia , mother of George l.

BWLer, Historiker & Soziologen gegen Rankings

Live in the library 26: Amanda Palmer – Ukulele Anthem

Last week we listened to The Dresden Dolls at Auckland Library. This week it’s the Dresden Dolls‘ singer, Amanda Palmer, performing in the British Library. She is accompanied by her page-turning husband Neil Gaiman.

If you find nice clips of live gigs in libraries please tell me in the comments! All songs will be tagged with „live in the library„.

Hiptype schnüffelt E-Book-Lesern hinterher

Die Firma Hiptype will E-Book-Leser überwachen.

„I think it’s another major website making a great decision,“ said Steve Coast, the founder of OpenStreetMap. He told Ars that he was unaware of Craigslist’s move until being sent a link to other media coverage on Tuesday.

Lagepläne in VuFind

Kathleen Bauer, Michael Friscia und Scott Matheson in in Code4Lib: From the Catalog to the Book on the Shelf: Building a Mapping Application for Vufind

At Yale University Library (YUL), recorded reference transactions revealed that after finding a book in the catalog patrons had difficulty knowing how to use the call number to find the book on the shelf. The Library created a mobile service to help locate the call number in the library stacks. From any call number of a book in Sterling Memorial Library at YUL, a map will be displayed which highlights that call number’s general area on a floor in the stacks. YUL introduced the mapping application in Yufind, a catalog in place at Yale since 2008 which is based on Vufind.

In the fall semester 2010, 7.3% of all questions at the Information Desk at Sterling Memorial Library were questions relating to finding a specific call number. After the mapping project was fully implemented in fall 2011 the number of call number related questions was reduced to 5.8% of all questions at the same desk, a 20.6% reduction in patron inquiries on this topic. More publicity for the mapping functionality and the iPad kiosk should further help reduce the number of requests. Based solely on the reduction in requests for help finding call numbers in Sterling Memorial Library the improved mapping can be judged successful and worth replicating elsewhere in the Yale Library system.

Report-a-weed BC

In British Columbia unerwünschter Schmetterlingsflieder

Abstract:

An object recognition system performs a number of rounds of dimensionality reduction and consistency learning on visual content items such as videos and still images, resulting in a set of feature vectors that accurately predict the presence of a visual object represented by a given object name within an visual content item. The feature vectors are stored in association with the object name which they represent and with an indication of the number of rounds of dimensionality reduction and consistency learning that produced them. The feature vectors and the indication can be used for various purposes, such as quickly determining a visual content item containing a visual representation of a given object name.
